Stocksville Jail

Got an ache in my heart like black honey in my veins
I sleep in a cell but my soul is on a train
My poor heart is frozen in the bells
I'm stuck in this Stocksville Jail

I devine my soul to be of mercury and salt
So these gemset walls of hell I can exalt
She left me here in Stocksville with a curse
I used to love that girl better than I love myself

I hear the prisonwall's laughter occulted in my brain
Every face in this pen seems like an open grave
Since that girl left town on a westbound train
I've had nothin left to consecrate

Through the canebreak & the corn & the cottonrows
As the sun falls down on the Georgia grove
I sit here studying the lines on my face
And all the wrinkles seem like empty roads
